How to Clean and Maintain Your Diffuser: The Guide

Updated September 2026 · 4 min read

Why clean your diffuser regularly?

Like any ultrasonic device that works with water, a diffuser gradually builds up limescale deposits and essential oil residue on its vibrating plate. Without regular maintenance, these deposits can reduce diffusion efficiency, or even damage the generator over time.

Routine cleaning (after every use)

  1. Unplug the device and empty any remaining water from the tank
  2. Wipe the inside of the tank with a soft, dry cloth
  3. Let the device air-dry before closing it up

Deep cleaning (every 1-2 weeks)

  1. Fill the tank with a mix of warm water and a few drops of white vinegar
  2. Leave to work for 10-15 minutes without switching the device on
  3. Using a cotton swab or small soft brush, gently clean the ultrasonic plate — the area most prone to build-up
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any vinegar residue
  5. Dry carefully before using again
⚠️ Warning: never submerge the whole device casing in water. Only the inner tank should come into contact with cleaning water — the electronics and USB port must stay completely dry.

How to prevent limescale build-up

If your area has particularly hard water, favour demineralised or filtered water over tap water. This significantly reduces how often deep cleaning is needed and extends the ultrasonic plate's lifespan.

What if diffusion becomes weak or irregular?

In most cases, weakening or irregular mist output simply signals that the ultrasonic plate needs a deep clean. Follow the steps above: the issue almost always resolves this way.

Cable and power care

Regularly check that the USB cable isn't damaged or excessively bent. Store the device somewhere dry between long periods of non-use, away from dust where possible.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my diffuser?

A quick clean after every use, and a deeper vinegar clean every one to two weeks with regular use.

Can I use regular detergent to clean the tank?

No, stick to white vinegar diluted with warm water — chemical detergents can leave residue that would then be diffused into the air.

How long does a well-maintained diffuser last?

With regular maintenance, an ultrasonic diffuser can easily last several years of daily use without noticeable performance loss.
